The Business Model Signal
A practical heuristic that applies to most AI tools: if you are not paying for the service, your data is likely part of how the service is sustained. This is not a conspiracy. It is economics. Free AI tools have enormous compute costs. Those costs have to be paid by someone. If the user is not paying, the funding comes from somewhere else — venture capital, advertising, data aggregation, model training. Understanding the business model helps you understand the data model.
Many free AI tools are genuinely valuable and operate at a temporary loss (especially products from large companies like Google, which can subsidize losses on consumer products). But the presence of a free tier is always worth questioning: why is this free? What is the business model that makes this sustainable? If you cannot articulate the business model, you should ask whether you understand what you're trading.
