What Cloud AI Actually Does With Your Data

The Training Data Question

The most important question is usually: does my conversation train the model? The honest answer is that it depends on the provider, the tier you're using, and your settings.

For consumer-tier ChatGPT accessed through OpenAI's website, conversations are used by default to improve the service. OpenAI's privacy policy states that conversations may be used to train and improve models, with an opt-out available (a toggle in settings). For ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise, training use is turned off by default. For Claude.ai, Anthropic states that conversations are not used to train models by default, regardless of tier. These policies change — OpenAI has updated theirs multiple times — which means the point is not to remember these specific policies but to know where to look for the answer in the actual policy, not to assume based on marketing.

If you use an AI tool regularly, finding and understanding the training data policy is worth your time. It's usually in the privacy policy or FAQ section of the provider's website.
