Demonstrated History
Trust builds over time through repeated choices made under pressure. You do not trust someone who has never been tested. You trust someone who has repeatedly chosen to do the right thing, including when doing the right thing was costly.
This is why trust cannot be rushed. It cannot be declared. It can only be earned.
When you place trust in someone new, you are taking a bet. You are assuming that their past behavior in similar situations is predictive of how they will behave in the future. But the more deeply you trust someone, the less you are betting on their past behavior and the more you are betting on their character. You trust them because they have repeatedly demonstrated that they prioritize what matters, even when it costs them.
An AI system has no history. It has been trained on data, but it has not lived. It has not faced a choice where the right thing was costly and chosen it anyway. It cannot build trust because trust is built through the accumulation of choices that demonstrate character, and code does not have character.
This is why trust cannot be transferred to a successor or a tool. Each relationship has to be rebuilt. Each person has to earn trust through their own choices.
