3. Relationship-Dependent Work
Here's what seems automatable: "Send birthday emails to all our clients."
Here's why it's a mistake: the client doesn't care about the email. They care that you remembered their birthday. Automating it removes the signal. It says "you're in a system" instead of "you matter."
This isn't about the quality of the message. It's about the relationship.
Where to draw the line: You can automate the logistics of relationships. Scheduling a call, sending an invoice, following up on an old inquiry. But the actual relationship—the moments where they know you care—those stay human.
The best automation here: "Remind me it's their birthday" (automation). "I'll write them a note" (you).
