"I Think I Made a Mistake"
The hardest escalation to make is the one that requires admitting a potential error. "I may have shared something I shouldn't have." This is also the most important one.
The instinct to hope the problem goes away is understandable and usually wrong. Most security incidents that become significant problems are the ones that weren't reported promptly because the person involved was embarrassed, uncertain, or didn't want to admit what they'd done. The window of response is often narrow. Escalating quickly gives professionals a chance to remediate before damage spreads.
"I think I may have made a mistake" is not a sign of incompetence. It's the sentence that actual security professionals use when they need help. It's the right thing to say.
